While we’ve carried and enjoyed many of Joseph’s albums over the last 9 years or so, ‘Vegas’ could well be his most complete and rounded collection of studio songs ever.
It certainly marks a slight departure from his earlier work in that it feels less rooted in the UK and has a broader scope and vision; the whole album is a mixture of edgy and fragile songs, great guitar work, and thoughtful lyrics.
The whole collection revolves around Joseph’s vocals and picked acoustic guitar, and he switches with ease from the driving rhythms of the title track, through to the delicate atmosphere of ‘Kindness’.
Highlights include the beautiful singing, lyrics and performance of the ‘Fading of Light’, ‘Kindness’ is an atmospheric piece prompted by the homeless on a freezing street, and ‘Vegas’ has obvious roots and it’s heart in the World’s gambling capital.
This is a superb singer/songwriter album, powerful lyrics that are beautifully sung backed by excellent acoustic guitar and subtle production. One of the finest UK singer/songwriter discs in recent memory. Highly recommended.
