Ruth Notman – The Life of Lilly
Picking up where her excellent debut album ‘Threads’ left off, ‘The Life of Lilly’ shows the development and growth of a talented writer, interpreter and performer of traditional and traditionally influenced songs.
As before, this is a mix of her a couple of her own songs and some well chosen songs from the tradition; but this time there’s much more confidence on display in her vocals and especially in the arrangements which range from delicate low-key backing through to full band arrangements including bass, drums and electric guitars.
This mixture in the make up of the soundscape paired with the smooth easy melodies throughout make the twelve songs pass in an instance.
Highlights include a light and bouncy reading of the Dylan’s ‘Si Tu Dois Partir’ that sits proudly at the centre of the disc, and an excellent reading of ‘The Cruel Sister’, one of the best known child ballads, but in truth this is a disc with strong songs, performances and arrangements running throughout.
To support the more adventurous and mature arrangements, she’s joined by a good range of players including Saul Rose, Peter Tickell and Bella Hardy who all provide beautiful playing throughout.
There’s little to dislike about ‘The Life of Lilly’, and it represents much more than a marker for the future for Ruth – highly recommended.
