Loudon Wainwright – Ten Songs for the New Depression

Over the past 40 years or so Loudon has earned the reputation as one of the very finest singer/songwriters around – his output is varied and ranges from political and social commentary through to beautifully subtle comic songs.  Here on ‘Ten Songs for the New Depression’ he’s taken a topical approach and written songs dealing directly with the current recession – he presents 8 of his own new songs, and 2 that were written during the Great Depression.
While the premise may sound endlessly gloomy, Loudon’s take on this brings humour and optimism to the fore and it’s hard not to raise a smile to his wry sense of looking on the world.
Presented here by just Loudon and guitar (or ukulele) every one of these songs is presented in a manner forces the listener to focus on the lyrics whilst adding enough backing to add depth to the song.
The two songs from 80 years ago fit in perfectly to the overall feel of the disc, and a subtle lyrically change from Roosevelt to Obama in ‘On to Victory, Mr Roosevelt’ highlights the same problems are there, just separated by time.
Other highlights include ‘House’, a song that talks about not divorcing due to being unable to sell a house, ‘Cash for Clunkers’ is a comic look at the strategy to create demand for new cars, and ‘Middle of the Night’ is a beautifully written song that takes an optimistic view on change.
‘Ten Songs’ is a rewarding album, it takes a balanced view at the current economic situation and leaves the listener is full of real personality and humour.  Not to be missed!
